Growing together.Lead Pulmonary Function Specialists support the Pulmonary Department throughout the Kelsey-Seybold enterprise by conducting diagnostic tests to assess lung function and respiratory health. They work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to perform spirometry, lung volume measurements, and diffusion studies, while overseeing testing protocols and Pulmonary Function laboratory operations. The Lead Pulmonary Function Specialist demonstrates a high level of independence and assists with orientation, in-service training, and continuing education, serving as a resource to Pulmonary Function Specialists, clinical staff, physicians, and healthcare professionals. In collaboration with clinical leadership, they support staff development, mentoring, performance feedback, and quality improvement initiatives with measurable outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities:
- 15% Assumes daily leadership role and demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills in Pulmonary Function Testing.
- 5% Lead provides daily leadership and diagnostic expertise for staff

- Lead is the primary resource for training and onboarding new pulmonary function technologists for the department
- Creates, develops, disseminates, and implements appropriate education for new PFS staff
- Provides departmental training and testing for annual training and competencies for PFS staff and staff performing spirometry testing
- 10% The PFS - Lead is a resource to other Pulmonary Function technicians and Ambulatory staff, Physicians, Nursing, and Clinic Administration

- Performs, oversees, and works with others in providing direct patient and family-centered care. Identifies patient/family education needs and ensures that patient/family members have adequate information to participate in care and that they are given choices in the process
- Lead PFS ensures patient care is provided to the highest standard of evidence-based practice

- Performs pulmonary assessments and diagnostic respiratory services to formulate recommendations to the physicians and nursing staff regarding patient care
- Reviews patient's EMR to determine health status and potential respiratory interventions needed
- Makes recommendations for testing
- Provides preliminary interpretation of selective laboratory/diagnostic tests
- Performs spirometry, lung volumes, diffusion capacity, and complete pulmonary function testing
- Performs equipment calibration and setup
- Performs 6MWT, oxygen qualifying testing, and exhaled breath testing (FENO)
- Schedules testing and links orders in EPIC
- Provides accurate documentation and billing in the electronic medical record

- The PFS - The Lead - assists with identifying quality improvement initiatives and designs initiatives that provide measurable outcomes
- Follow precautions to ensure patient safety by having a solid working knowledge of infectious disease/cross contamination, pathophysiology, and basic emergency care

- Provides technical oversight of clinical care activities and the development, refinement, and continuous quality improvement of procedures and policies, evaluation of new equipment, and ensures appropriate coordination and distribution of staffing and equipment resources for new clinic set-ups
- Provides education as needed based on requests from other departments
- Collaborates with leadership and assists in the design, development, coordination, and maintenance of orientation programs and materials (clinical procedures, policies, and guidelines). Provides new provider employees with knowledge of organization/department policies and procedures
- Participates in new hire interviews as requested
- Works with the Medical, Administrative, and Nursing Leadership to define quality initiatives
- Complies with the organization/department initiatives and quality improvement projects
- Provides feedback to employees regarding work performance and shares this feedback with clinical leadership
- Provides PFS updates/research for pulmonologists and other physicians as indicated

Required Qualifications:
- H. S. Diploma or GED, 2 years college mathematics, physical and biological sciences
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
- Registered or Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT)
- 6+ years of clinical experience in a full range of diagnostic pulmonary function testing
- Experienced in working with advanced pulmonary function systems
- Experience in the implementation of pulmonary function systems (training) at a local and global level
- Proficiency in advanced computer applications and spirometry hardware software and/or software
- Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Driver's License and access to reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications:
- BLS/CPR Certified
- Bilingual
Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The hourly pay for this role will range from $24 - $43 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
